A Moment In Time...

The New York Times Lens (Photography, Video and Viual Journalism) blog began promoting a neat idea back in April - that readers of the blog all around the world take a picture at the same time on the same day and send it in to the Lens blog. The date to take the photo was Sunday May 2, 2010 and the time 15:00 U.T.C. (11:00am my time).

Lens would then put together a world photo-mosiac entitled "A Moment In Time" consisting of thousands of submitted images (over 14,000 last I checked).

I was on the road driving home after a weekend spent in Port Perry and at 11:00am snapped the picture shown below, which the New York Time Lens blog posted
here. Click on the image for a larger, hi-res version.

Photopalooza...

Some recent photos taken around my neck of the woods.

Experimenting with night photography and my new tripod.

Both these moon shots were taken from my driveway looking up over my house.

Lake Simcoe beginning to freeze over in early December. Converted to black & white in Photoshop.

More of my photography....

Water way at the very south end of Lake Simcoe.

Sunset on Lake Simcoe. I know some people think sunset shots are boring but I like them and it's my blog....

Photopalooza...

Some recent photos taken by yours truly....

Cooks Bay at night. This was taken at the end of my street looking south. I was playing with the settings on the camera experimenting with taking night photos.

East Gwillimbury lift locks. The Canadian government paid lots of money many, many years ago trying to set-up a water passage from Lake Simcoe in the north to Lake Ontario in the south. They went as far as building the locks before abandoning the project. The locks never saw a single boat pass through them.

Taken from the dashboard of my car driving north on Metro Rd. towards Sutton. Used a slow shutter speed to get the lighting & blurred effects. No Photoshopping.

Taken on railroad tracks by Concession #2 in East Gwillimbury. Looking north towards Bradford.

Wet stones between railroad ties on the same railroad tracks in East Gwillimbury.

Green moss growning on downed tree in East Gwillimbury.

Photos at JPG mag...

Blatant self promotion warning....

I've joined this online photography site called JPG where I display some of my photographs. JPG also has a print version - JPG magazine - that gets its content from submissions to the website under various themes that users & visitors to the site vote on. I currently have one photo up for votes in the "Color Theory" theme.

So if you want to go and see my photos and vote for me please feel free to do so.

End of blatant self promotion warning...

Got rid of "The Wife"...

No, not my wife, "The Wife". I'm referring to my heavily modified, beloved 1974 Fender Precision Bass that I have owned for nearly 30 years.

After more than a few years of non-playing and having no desire to ever get back into a band situation, I decided that rather than have it stored in it's case in the basement I'd see if I could sell it or trade it for a digital SLR camera. After less than 24 hours on craigslist.org I received numerous offers of cash or trade. Tonight I met with one of those people and swapped "The Wife" for the following: a mint condition Nikon D70 DSLR body with a 35-70mm lens, a 70-210mm lens, battery charger and 2 memory cards. Here's the camera:

I couldn't be happier. Been playing with the new toy all evening. Can't wait to try it out at the
Nine Inch Nails / Jane's Addiction concert in a few weeks....

Hurry up and wait...

Been a while since I posted here even though I initially wanted to post at least one item daily.... Oh well c'est la vie. Haven't been in the right/write frame of mind lately....

Been having some health issues the last few weeks that finally came to a head with me going to see our family doctor. I hate going to the doctor with a passion so for me to voluntarily make an appointment (actually three appointments now) you know I'm feeling shitty. I'm waiting for the results from the first two appointments of being poked, prodded and scanned to the tune of 2 urine samples, 10 vials of blood and 2 upper body x-rays. Apparently my blood pressure was also through the roof. Still have to go for an ultrasound and a couple of more appointments in the coming weeks as well. In the meantime I'm on antibiotics and Lorazepam (the latter for insomnia). My Doctor, who I must acknowledge is an amazing human being, is not sure what the actual problem is yet - other than the physical signs of swollen, painful lymph nodes under my right arm and general discomfort/abdominal pain. And me? I'm in that hurry up and wait stage. Seems there are several diagnostic possibilities ranging from medium concern to, well, let's not go there just yet....

In sunnier news, yesterday I spent a nice Saturday afternoon with my family and mother to celebrate my daughter's 17th birthday. I can't believe the little tiny pink bundle I drove home from the hospital is now 17. I remember her birth and childhood like it was yesterday.... I made a chocolate cheesecake for her - seems my cheesecake has become a family favourite for birthdays. It was a good, relaxing time. What an amazingly beautiful, smart, funny young woman she has become - brings tears of joy to my eyes....

Haven't been doing much photography lately as I haven't been out for any walks in the last week or so. Hopefully get out sometime this week and take some more shots. Speaking of photography - I found the most amazing photo-blog; The Big Picture, run by The Boston Globe. Click on any picture to load several images related to the main image with lots of descriptive text. I've become addicted to this site - the images are no less than spectacular.... I should also point out that I found the site through John Gruber's always engaging Daring Fireball blog.
